Swirl is an Elemental Reaction in Genshin Impact. Elemental Reactions are a combat mechanic in Genshin Impact. When a Playable Character inflicts an Enemy with an Element, the Enemy gains a decaying aura of that Element, which can be combined with a new compatible Elemental Aura to lead to an Elemental Reaction. This mechanic can also be used on players and objects.

Elemental Reactions can be triggered using the 7 Elements in Genshin Impact, Anemo (Wind), Geo (Earth), Electro (Lightning), Dendro (Nature), Hydro (Water), Pyro (Fire) and Cryo (Frost).

Swirl Reaction Genshin Impact

Swirl will create an Pyro, Electro, Hydro, or Cryo whirlwind depending on the unique element used in the reaction. It also applies all targets hit by the AoE with the unique element, allowing for follow up reactions such as Overloaded or Frozen. However, the original target in which the reaction was triggered will not have the element applied, making the reaction less effective against Bosses.

The Pyro, Electro and Cryo whirlwinds will deal elemental damage of the included element, but the Hydro whirlwind will only apply the Wet status.

Swirl's damage will scale with Character level and Elemental Mastery, with the base damage of the reaction being multiplied by these variables. ATK, Crit rate, Crit DMG and any other stats besides CL and EM will not impact the damage of this reaction.

How to activate Swirl Genshin Impact

Swirl can be activated by combining the Anemo aura with the Pyro, Hydro, Electro or Cryo aura or vice versa. This can be achieved by either applying both auras with the Playable Characters in your party, or by applying Pyro, Hydro, Electro or Cryo/Anemo to an Enemy who already has the complementary aura, such as a Anemo Slime or a Pyro, Hydro, Electro or Cryo Slime.

Follow up reactions are a large factor of effectiveness for Swirl. For example, consider the following scenario: There are 10 Hilichurls in a camp, and 5 are inflicted with Hydro by Tartaglia's Elemental Burst Havoc: Obliteration. Instead of a Cryo character being used to Freeze these 5 Hilichurls, an AoE Anemo character such as Venti could trigger Swirl and inflict the remaining 5 with Hydro as well. Then, a Cryo character can be used to Freeze all Hilichurls.

Example: Yelan uses her Elemental Skill Lingering Lifeline to inflict Hydro, then Sucrose uses her Elemental Skill Astable Anemohypostasis Creation - 6308 to trigger a Swirl reaction with Hydro.
